Discussion – Constitution: Strengths and Weaknesses
Considering the Constitution as it currently exists (that is, after all 27 of the amendments have been added to it), and based on the discussion of it in the textbook chapter, pick two or three strengths and two or three weaknesses that particularly stand out to you. What principles of the Constitution or text in the document do you think the founders got right and wrong? The Constitution has been amended 27 times, so don’t focus on anything that has been changed. For example, we all agree that slavery was a horrific mistake. That was done away with, so don’t focus on that issue here. However, important principles and rules are still in effect that you might appreciate or believe needs additional fixing.
If you want to get your hands e-dirty by digging through the Constitution, you can find it here.
The first 10 amendments to the Constitution are known as the Bill of Rights, and you can view them here. (Note: Scroll down past the Congressional resolution of the original 12 proposed amendments. The text of the Bill of Rights is at the bottom of the page.)
The rest of the amendments to the Constitution (numbers 11-27) can be found here.
The best posts will consist of four to six “meaty” paragraphs that list what you think are strengths and weakness, with thorough explanations for why you think they are thorough explanations. An excellent post will be spell-checked and grammatically proper.
