Malware Mitigation
In today’s world, there have been various instances of malware attacks performed by hackers in various organizations. While every organization does it’s best to thwart those attack from a technical standpoint, it’s always best to have a plan of action to ensure that best practices are communicated across for the employees to follow.
The most critically hit area during a malware attack is the data, which can be destroyed. Hence, one of the best practices to follow is backing up the system regularly in another secure location and ensure both the systems are not connected over the network. This will reduce the possibility of the malware finding its way to both the systems. Some of the other best practices are listed below (Roussey, 2017):
1. Training employees on suitable actions during a malware attack. This ensures that the attack is contained and reduces the damage which can be done otherwise.
2. Reviewing system permissions. Ensuring that the organization follows least access policy will go a long way to reduce the origin points of the malware.
3. Update the software regularly. It is critical to maintaining the software on a regular basis as per vendor recommendations. This ensures that any known security gaps are covered through patches and thus reduce the probability of attack.
4. Spam Filters. Ensuring that the emails being exchanged between employees internally and externally is strictly filtered for spam will go a long way to reduce the attacks. The best way is to have a policy in place regarding the attachments being sent in an email. The most common way to transmit malware is through archived files, which when restricted will help a lot.
