Stakeholder Analysis 2000 Words – Due Week 8 Friday 5pm. *ICANN Case Study The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is responsible for the domain name system globally. ICANN promotes itself as using a multi-stakeholder model to deliver consensus in its policy directions. Look at this diagram showing what ICANN does and the role of stakeholders: http://www.icann.org/sites/default/files/assets/ecosystem-2500×1622-21mar13-en.pnghttp://www.icann.org/sites/default/files/assets/ecosystem-2500×1622-21mar13-en.png New generic Top Level Domains are a recent new direction for ICANN. This means that the well-recognised Top Level Domains (TLDs) such as .com, .org and .edu will be joined by brand names, cultural names and city names. Examples are: Monash Tokyo Kiwi ?? (xn?cg4bki) – Korean for “Samsung/Samseong” ???? (xn--ngbc5azd) – Arabic for “web/network” This assignment will concentrate on the new gTLDs and you will analyse the role of stakeholders in setting the policy course for the new gTLD program. How to Map Stakeholders There are several ways you can map stakeholders. The first that I will present is from a classic paper on stakeholder analysis. Figure 1 Adapted from: Thomas N. Garavan, (1995) “Stakeholders and strategic human resource development”, Journal of European Industrial Training, Vol. 19 Iss: 10, pp.11 – 16 This matrix pits predictability against level of interest and helps to map how much influence a particular stakeholder may have. While it outlines stakeholders in an organisation, it can be applied to a broader grouping of stakeholders. Consider these questions to help you identify and defend your stakeholders: WHO – The key group and/or people? WHAT – What reason do they have to be a stakeholder? What is their agenda? WHERE – Where are these stakeholders… is that relevant? WHEN – When did they become stakeholders… is that important? WHY – Most important of all WHY are they a stakeholder? What’s in it…
