ABOUT THE ASSIGNMENT:

The New York Times occasionally publishes a column called “Neighborhood Joint,” in which different reporters profile local spots around the five boroughs. Each “Neighborhood Joint” reporter combines his/her own observations of a particular “joint” with background/historical information about it.

For this assignment, you’ll write two “Neighborhood Joint” profiles – each one about a spot in your own neighborhood: one you already know well, and one you don’t. (Perhaps a building, a park, a monument, a playground, a school, a religious site, a subway station, a firehouse, a power plant, a construction site, a bridge, a business of any kind—restaurant? tailor? hair salon?—the list goes on.)

Just like the “Neighborhood Joint” columns, your profile will include descriptions of your chosen spot. In order to write those descriptions, you’ll need to go to your spot and observe carefully, taking notes of what you hear, see, smell, and so on. “Neighborhood Joint” reporters open with & include descriptions written with specificity and sensory detail. Such descriptions work to set a tone/create atmosphere; so should yours. 

Also like the “Neighborhood Joint” columns, your profile will include some background/historical information. Typically, the “Joint” reporters for the New York Timesinclude background information gathered through interviews with owners, workers, customers, etc. You, however, will be gathering information a bit differently — you’ll be doing it via database or newspaper research (nyc.gov may also be a good resource, depending on what you’re writing about.). You’ll find links to recommended sources up on Blackboard. In each “Joint,” you’ll need to include a minimun of three facts, obtained from a minimum of two sources, and you’ll need to paraphrase the information you decide to include.

You certainly *may* use information gathered from an interview or interviews, but this isn’t mandatory. If you do include information from an interview, you’ll still need to include information culled from database/newspaper resources. You may also touch on own history with the place, if you have one. Does any particular experience stand out? If so, include it.

TO RECAP, EACH “JOINT” *MUST* INCLUDE:

1) Recent observations turned into description. Your descriptions should include sensory detail and covey the atmosphere of the place.

2)  Your own experience(s)/history with the place(s) you are profiling, when applicable.

3) Background information gathered from databases and/or newspapers. Minimum two sources/three facts per “Joint.” You must paraphrase information.

EACH “JOINT” MAY INCLUDE:
