Next, suggest reasons why some of the interviewed individuals may have reacted negatively to the name of the course and the course description. Take a position on whether you would keep or change the course name. Provide a rationale for your position. Part 2
Consider the following situation:
You walk into your office and you hear co-workers talking about a recent situation where the police arrested and killed a young African American man. Your team is really divided on this issue. There are some individuals who believe that the police are corrupt and using racial profiling to identify and harm citizens based on their race. There are still others who feel that the young Black men who were attacked provoked the police and that racial profiling is ridiculous. There are still other co-workers who are intimidated by the entire conversation and just hang their heads and avoid the discussion. You breathe a sigh of relief when the conversation ends and everyone goes back to work. Soon after, your manager comes to you to inquire what was the conversation all about.
As the new director of diversity education, it’s part of your responsibility to provide a forum for constructive dialogue on these topics. For this discussion activity, describe how you could facilitate a dialogue regarding this topic. What types of things would you need to be mindful of? What strategies could you use before, during, and after any kind of a dialogue/workshop? How would you create a safe space where all could feel heard and respected? What are some of your personal biases that may influence your facilitation?

- As an educator, it is your responsibility to learn how to engage the entire class without segregating any students or allowing students to segregate themselves. Describe one (1) activity that you would use in your classroom to engage a group of students from diverse backgrounds. Provide a rationale explaining why you believe this activity will work.

- From the article “Update on Affirmative Action in Higher Education: A Current Legal Overview” in this week’s readings, read the court case Hopwood v. University of Texas ( you may have to research the court case on google, but the article is attached named article)
- Next, take a position on whether you support or oppose the court’s decision in not allowing the University of Texas to take racial or cultural preferences into consideration when admitting students. Support your position with two (2) examples from the case.

- Imagine that you are a Major World Religions instructor who is also passionate about your own personal religious beliefs and practices. A classroom discussion breaks out in which one (1) of your students begins to make derogatory comments about your religion. The discussion escalates into an argument between you and the student, and the entire class feels uncomfortable. Suggest a more professional way you could have handled the situation. Recommend two (2) strategies that you can use in the future when your emotions are similarly triggered.
