Technology, Globalization, and the Changing Workplace

Technological innovations are often applauded for providing social progress, yet some warn of larger social consequences that could negatively affect humans in the near term or more distant future. Will the impending use of robots as car drivers, delivery services, restaurant workers, pharmacists, attorneys, journalists, bankers, or other positions (both blue-collar and white-collar) offer a negative future with increased joblessness and other issues, or a positive future of growth and new opportunities?

After reading through the article(s) and thinking about what you have learned in this week’s readings, analyze how technology may affect future (and not so distant future) jobs on a global scale.

Here are some suggested questions to consider for your initial post. You do not need to answer all of these questions! Do be sure to analyze issues related to technology, work, and global society, and paraphrase and cite the required course materials at least 3 times in your post. Required materials include the textbook chapters, lectures, and required videos. Your linked article about technology does not count as one of the sources, but please be sure to use the article to support your examples and ideas.

• Will robots take away human jobs and leave nothing for us to do, or will new careers open up because of new technology? How will the work environment change if people are replaced by robots? How do bureaucracies and globalization fit into your discussion?

• What do you find most exciting or unsettling about the growing use of technology and the workplace?

• Consider how technological development in the distant and not-so-distant past has impacted workers and society. Which jobs do you think are most at risk? How might people who are currently employed in those fields find new work? What about on a global scale?

• How will societal changes, such as the innovations noted above, impact you individually, your workplace, your career field, and society overall? What kinds of ongoing training and skill development might you need in your chosen career path to keep up with technological innovations?

In your peer responses, discuss and debate the social impacts of work and technology and globalization in the past, present, and future, and be sure to cite required course materials at least once in each peer response.
