There are several stages to Solution Focused Brief Therapy:

  • One needs to build a relationship with the client. By using active listening skills, the helper gains a clear understanding of the problem. Working with the client, the professional and the client discuss client strengths, as well as reflect upon successful problem solving behavior in the past.
  • The client and helper discuss times when the client was able to be successful in problem solving. The helper and client also begin to discuss possible resources that can aid in helping in their current situation.
  • Goals are established. Client expectations are taken into consideration, and goals are often written down and defined in measurable terms.
  • The helper and client then discuss ways to achieve this goal, emphasizing client success. Homework is assigned that includes interventions that the client can work on outside of the session.
