Definition of Leadership

Based on the readings for this unit, your independent research, and your self-reflection, write a paper that addresses the following prompts:

  • What is your definition of leadership?
  • How important is it to have a definition of leadership? How does your definition support your perspective on the concept of leadership?
  • What is your approach to understanding leadership? Does it start with a definition, or do you simply follow your instincts?
  • What is your definition of management?
  • What do you see as the differences between leadership and management?

Complete and submit your assignment as an attachment. You are also required to submit your draft to SafeAssign (Unit 1 Definition of Leadership).

Your paper should be 2–3 pages in length and include a minimum of two sources other than your textbook. Format your paper according to current APA style and formatting guidelines.

Example assignment: You may use the assignment example, linked in the Resources, to give you an idea of what a Proficient or higher rating on the scoring guide would look like.

Readings

Use your The Leadership Challenge text by Kouzes and Posner to complete the following readings:

  • Chapter 3, “Clarify Values.”
  • Chapter 4, “Set the Example.”

Use your Strengths Based Leadership text to complete the following readings:

  • “Introduction.”
  • “Part One.”

Retailers need to define their target markets and then decide how they will differentiate themselves from competitors who also want to serve those markets. For example, different retailers offer different products, have different customer service policies, and design their stores differently. The decisions a retailer makes must be consistent with this overall positioning strategy and provide clear value to customers.

Consider the retail positioning strategy of Nordstrom’s. In an essay:

  1. Explain some of the choices that Nordstrom’s has made that distinguish it from other retailers, such as Target.
  2. Explain the likely intention behind Nordstrom’s retail positioning strategies. How does Nordstrom expect these positioning strategies to attract customers and create a distinct competitive advantage?

  • Step 1: Capture your topic. For the critical reflections, please choose a one or two sentence direct quotation from the readings or supporting resources as your prompt. The quotation(s) should reference, in a relevant, meaningful way, the issues, idea or concept that you will reflect about and that, in the end, you hope all learners will come to think about as a deeply important truth or lesson of this class. To make it easier for you to reflect meaningfully on the topic, the quotation should be relevant to a topic that you can tie directly to your own (or others’) experiences, observations, and critical reasoning. It should also be something you are willing to discuss with the class and something you are willing to think critically about.

    Step 2: Write your reflection.
Once you have identified the quotation prompt for your reflection, post it at the top of your paper, followed by a line space. Then, share 300 to 400 words (in meaningful, well organized paragraphs) that defend your belief that there is an important truth or lesson relevant to this course to be gleaned from this quotation. Essentially, your job is to clarify just what the lesson to be learned is and then to strongly (and thoughtfully) defend why you think the lesson is vital. To help you think about your topic and write well, consider (and answer) these questions: What truth or lesson is being communicated by this quote? Why is this truth or lesson so important? How do your own or other’s experiences and observations relate to and support this truth or lesson? In what ways does this lesson make logical sense to you? In what ways does this lesson make emotional sense to you? How might this lesson be relevant to your own or others’ life and career? Why do some fail to live as if this truth or lesson were important? Why might some suggest this truth or lesson is not important? How would you defend the truth of this lesson from those who disagree and believe the lesson is not important? What can we do (at an individual, community, or society level to make this truth or lesson better recognized or practiced? You are encouraged to be creative in your reflections. Your reflections may include, when relevant, links to media, pictures, or other supporting resources.

Step 3: Write a Discussion Question that Prompts Further Dialog on the Topic.
End your entry with a line space and then post a single, relevant, provocative, open-ended question that you believe will prompt further debate and reflection by readers.

Step 4: Give Your Reflection a Title.
Be sure to give your reflection a relevant, catchy but professional title. The title should be something creative that sparks other learners to want to read your reflection. Your title should be like a creative, but good headline.

This assignment provides you an opportunity to demonstrate mastery of course outcomes:

3. select metrics that are aligned with the organization’s objectives in order to ensure organizational success

4. formulate a plan for implementing a total rewards program in order to ensure success of the program

In this assignment, you will write and present a MS PowerPoint Presentation that describes and justifies the total rewards metrics that you propose. The course material provides examples of metrics and how they are used to evaluate the effectiveness of the Total Rewards Program. These metrics will used as a portion of the final paper due Week 8 (the final assessment for the class). Feedback from the instructor may require some revision to the chosen metrics prior to use in the final paper. At least three scholarly references from the course materials are to be presented in APA format, as well as respective in-text citations and relevant Web site documentation if information about the organization is taken from a Web site.

You will define the term metrics, explain how metrics are used to evaluate the success of the total rewards program, identify, describe, and provide examples of at least three metrics and share how you will collect the data for each metric and how you will set the benchmark or goal target for each that you would use to compute and analyze the Total Rewards Program in the organization you are studying in the course. Justification for the metrics linked to the organizational objectives, requisite competencies, and challenges should also be included.

At the least, the presentation will include the following segments:

1. Title Slide

2. Introduction and Purpose of the Presentation

3. Academic Definition of the Term Metric

4. Explanation of the Use of Metrics in Evaluating the Success of the Total Rewards Program

5. Three Metrics (Identify, Describe and Provide Examples AND share how you will collect the data for each metric AND how you will set the benchmark or goal target for each).

6. Justification of the Metrics Selected (State how the metrics will directly evaluate the total rewards program)

7. Conclusions

8. Reference Page (at least three scholarly sources from course materials)

Attached are weeks 3-5 course material, the sample powerpoint from the class.

Lastly is the first part of this assignment which was submitted to the course. Please use the Project 1 as a reference for this project.

The final paper is a compilation of all components you’ve completed so far with any updates that you’d like to include. In essence, chapters 1 through 3 of a research paper are the three chapters that you should submit.

Chapter 1 – The problem

Chapter 2 – The literature review

Chapter 3 – The research method

Please put these sections together and submit your research proposal. If you’ve submitted all sections up to this point this shouldn’t take a lot of effort to compile.

The exam 2 was failed so I really need A’s on all this work PLEASE!

Part I: Scenario

You just won tickets to that thing you love as a prize in a contest sponsored by Cool Ranch Doritos™ that you forgot you entered three months ago! Bummer, though, you have both class and work on the day of the thing. Now you have to write a bunch of emails, because there’s no way you’re going to miss the thing, if at all possible.

In one word document, write an email to each of the following people:

  • Your boss: You must get out of work!
  • Your teacher: You are so not going to class, but your teacher is a total freak about attendance and pop quizzes and junk!
  • Your buddy: You wouldn’t dream of going to the thing without your buddy, but–oh, no!–your buddy is in class with you on that day. What do you say to your buddy? Will they write the instructor, ditch, or just not go to the thing? Email your buddy with a plan!

Part II: Comparison

When you write your emails, imagine your boss, one of your teachers, and your best buddy. Try to imagine what you would say to each person in your email. Make your tone realistic for each situation. Once you have written the emails, use the Comments feature in your Word or Google doc to compare the style you used in each, and address the following:

  • Highlight and comment on the general differences do you see
  • Highlight and identify words and/or sentences that characterize the different styles
  • Comment on which email do you think would be the most effective, and why

Submit your highlighted and commented Word document.
