Week 3 Contemporary Issue Position Essay

Choose a case from the
AMA Journal of Ethics Case Index and take a position. For this assignment you will evaluate the ethical arguments for or against the issue. Identify the potential legal arguments (consider current federal guidelines), indicate any potential professional code conflicts you foresee, and support your position with an explanation of your own ethical/moral foundation.

In your 2-3 page paper:

  • Identify the issue and state your ethical position.
  • How might this scenario play out or impact you in your role as a nurse practitioner?
  • Defend your position with legal, ethical, and professional evidence.
  • As part of your position, propose strategies and solutions for addressing the issues.
  • What other ethical issues does this case bring to light, if any?
  • Use these questions or bullet points as headings, also in text citation is required

Support your position with at least one scholarly source (it may be your text). Be sure to cite the article you choose, use APA format, and include a title page and reference page.

Provide feedback to the two post, demonstrate more depth and thought than simply stating “I agree” or “You are wrong.”

Reference scholarly or peer-reviewed sources to support your points, as appropriate (using proper citation methods).

Adult Attachment Interview Paper

This assignment focuses on how primary caregivers, usually parents but sometimes others, represent their relationship with and understanding of their child during an interview or conversation with you. The interview itself should take about 30 minutes, plus a few minutes for introductions and terminating the interview, so allow for 45 minutes total. Record the interview and listen to it carefully afterwards. Do not interview a person experiencing major life stressors such as domestic violence, recent or planned divorce/separation, severe illness in self or child, homelessness, etc. Please talk to me if you have questions about a particular situation your interviewee may be experiencing prior to arranging an interview. You may interview anyone other than a spouse or a partner, but please try to find a non-family member for a richer experience before asking family members. All papers should be in APA format and be 5 pages excluding title and reference page. Incorporate readings from the textbook to ensure understanding of the topic.

Textbook :

Broderick, P. C., & Blewitt, P. (2020). The life span: Human development for helping professionals (5th ed.). Hoboken, NJ: Pearson Education, Inc.

Here are the questions you can ask the primary caregiver of a particular child. Not all questions are required, and your questions are not limited to the following:

  1. Tell me about what you first noticed about _________ when she/he was born or in the first few weeks. (Or, if the child is adopted or a foster child, “when you first met.”)
  2. What kind of child is ____________? Or what do you notice about his/her personality?
  3. Follow up, if necessary, with “what are his/her strengths and/or challenges?”
  4. How would you characterize your relationship with _________? Has this changed over time?
  5. What kind of adult do you hope _______________ will become?
  6. Do you notice anything about your childhood or upbringing that affects your parenting?
  7. Can you provide me with two adjectives that describe your mother when you were little and give me an example of why you chose these words?
  8. Can you provide me with two adjectives that describe your father when you were little and give me an example of why you chose these words?
  9. Did this conversation stimulate other thoughts that you might want to add before we finish?

The analysis of the interview, after you have listened to it carefully two or three times, should include the following:

  1. What themes are present in your interviewee’s view of his/her child? Support your analysis with short non-identifying quotes from the interview.
  2. Do you see any connection between attachment theory and the comments the interviewee made during the interview? Why or why not? Give examples to support your thoughts (cite your textbook!).
  3. Include other non-attachment comments as needed. Be sure to include a short introduction, including the general setting and non-identifying information about the person you interviewed.

Destroy or erase the audio of the interview when you finish your paper unless the interviewee requests it. Use pseudonyms (the interviewee chooses names) in your paper.

Note: For a person who is in the last trimester of pregnancy, you will need to modify the above questions. Question 1 would focus on fetal movements, reactions to sounds, maternal stress, etc. Questions 2 & 3 should be eliminated. Question 4 would focus on maternal joys and challenges right now. Question 5: “What, if anything, do you notice about your developing relationship with your baby?” Questions 6-7 remain the same.

Option 2: Cultural sensitivity is crucial to local and global success. It is very difficult to be aware of and sensitive to issues and traditions we are ignorant about. How can we decrease our own ignorance? Can we be proactive about it, or do we just have to wait until someone alerts us that we are being insensitive?

I am personally of the opinion that you should always be learning and observing. If you have waited long enough to be alerted that you have been insensitive then it is likely already too late.In the workplace, it is vital that you maintain the absolute most professional attitude possible. In most business, and certainly in nursing, it is highly likely that you will cross multiple different cultural backgrounds in any given day and knowing how to act accordingly is vital. In nursing, it is vital as different cultures will approach health care in different ways and if a nurse is culturally unaware or inappropriate it can cause a variety of poor reactions. “Being culturally competent and aware will increase our skills in providing care to our patients. Recognizing and acting upon our nursing assessments among diverse cultures as well as vulnerable ones is key to saving someone’s life” (Jimenez, 2015). At the very least it may impair the patients trust in you, at the very worst it could interact with another cultural custom and it could cost the patient their health or their life, or it could set you up to not only help their immediate medical problem, but provide a better health future for them overall.

It is possible to be passive about cultural sensitivity. For instance, when in new cultural environments the first thing I do is observe to see what I an ascertain simply from general exposure. However, being proactive is always advisable. One such way of being proactive would be to directly ask the people you are working with whether they are patients, other coworkers, or clientele what would be the best way for you to be respectful to their cultural needs.I know that in nursing this is vital as it is entirely possible that because a patient may not identify with or follow all aspects of their culture.

Manning and Curtis (2015) had a few recommendations for how to help to be more culturally aware including connecting with your own culture, empathize with being the minority or different, seek out educational opportunities, attend cultural events and immerse in arts such as books or movies, and communicate with people who are different (p.324 – p.325).While it may be impossible to know everything about every cultural, at the very least it costs nothing to attempt to be respectful and to be aware.Educational opportunities exist everywhere and if we seek them out then we can learn and better interact with the world around us.
