The current evolution of human-robot interactions combines robotic devices and intelligent mechanisms with human operators. Considering the current and near-future advances of robot technology and augmented systems in an environment where problems need to be resolved, much depends on the knowledge available to the operating system. When humans interact with such a system, the human brings a nearly limitless potential for various modes and paths for reasoning to resolve problems. When working collaboratively, either the human or the system programming may demonstrate limitations in knowledge, or, the two sources (system programming and human memory) may not be consistently aligned. Should this occur, a resolution must be provided.

Explain how you (a human factors representative working with a design group) would evaluate functions that require interactions involving reasoning between robots and human operators. Identify a particular industry or application and illustrate with an example how such a human-robot collaboration might occur and how conflict involving limited domain knowledge might be resolved. An additional element to evaluate is risk assessment in the workplace applications that address threats to safe operations, obstacles to efficient performance, and reducing the potential for error. Provide at least one scholarly resource to support your evaluation strategy.

Present this as a brief. Your brief should be approximately 800 words in length and should be written in APA format.

Below is a description of an imaginary couple. Read the description first then continue on to the assignment.

Lester and Dorothy Winchester are now in their 80s and life has changed for them quite a bit over the last couple of decades. They were married in their early 20s and raised 6 kids in a large 2 story house on a farm in northern Iowa. They are fiercely independent and have been adamant about staying in their home as they get older.

For most of their life they have been able to provide for their family by growing corn on a 500 acre plot of land and growing vegetables in a large garden next to their house. They also raise chickens for the eggs and meat.

Mrs. Winchester likes to spend her spare time cooking and sewing. She also likes to host small dinner parties with friends on occasion and always hosts the family at Thanksgiving and Christmas. One of her other favorite hobbies is scrapbooking. However, Dorothy has arthritis and it has been progressing over the last several years.

Mr. Winchester, when not listening to weather reports and checking up on corn sales, likes to read books on the old west and World War II. He also likes to tinker with farm equipment, especially his antique 1949 Model A John Deere Tractor. Lately he has also taken to looking at farm and weather reports on the computer you got him last Christmas because they are updated more frequently online. Lester is particularly proud that he quit smoking 10 years ago after 50 years of smoking half a pack a day.

Both of them like to travel together in the offseason and one of their favorite things to do is to take their RV and go to national parks. They like to plan at least one national park visit a year.

Assignment:

You are going to pretend that you are one of the Winchester children. While Lester and Dorothy still seem remarkably fit for being in their early 80s they have definitely slowed down over the last decade and they are finally starting to show the wear and tear of a long, hard-working life. You have suggested that they think about moving in with you and your family or some other care facility but they will not have anything to do with it. They feel as if they are doing fine and that it is not necessary for them to move away from the home they have lived in for almost 60 years.

So you have decided that you are going to assess their lives and their home and are going to try and make their life in their home more comfortable and more amenable to the changes that they are experiencing.

This project will have you assessing the challenges your parents will likely face in this scenario and then you will come up with solutions on how to help them. For example, to help your father read farm and weather reports on the computer better you could go into the settings and increase the font size.

You should assess the likely changes in the following areas and address at least one change per category to the home or their lives that could help with those changes.

  • Body build (changes in muscle mass, height and weight)
  • Strength and endurance
  • Mobility
  • Vision
  • Hearing
  • Touch and Balance
  • Taste and Smell
  • Cardiovascular function
  • Respiratory function

The final product should be an assessment of each category and how it is likely to affect Dorothy and Lester as they continue to get older and the challenges they are likely to face in their home because of it. In addition each category should have at least one idea of how you could address these changes in their home and/or in their lifestyle.

Feel free to be creative but also be realistic. Imagine the constraints of your own household budget when helping as a guide to reality. Having a nurse live with them 24/7 is probably not a realistic solution not only because it would be very expensive but also because Dorothy and Lester would probably not want that kind of intrusion given their background.

Assignment 2: Problem Solving
Due Week 9 and worth 150 points

When faced with a problem, what do you do to solve it? This assignment asks you to apply a six-step to problem solving process to a specific problem scenario. You will write a paper that presents a synthesis of your ideas about solving the problem using this systematic approach. As Voltaire said, “No problem can withstand the assault of sustained thinking.”

Choose one (1) of the problem scenarios as a topic choice for your paper (Note: Your professor must approve your topic choice before you begin work on the assignment.)

Scenario 1: You have worked at your company for eleven (11) years. You have returned to college to earn a Bachelor’s degree in order to increase your chances for a promotion. You are nearly finished with your degree, when a supervisor’s position in a competing company becomes available in another state. The start date is in two (2) weeks, during your final exam period for your courses. The position offers a $15,000 per year salary increase, a car allowance, and relocation expenses. Your former supervisor works for the company and is recommending you for the position based on your outstanding job performance; if you want the job, it’s yours. All of the other supervisors at this level in the company have Master’s degrees, so you know that you would be expected to earn your Bachelor’s degree and continue on to a Master’s degree. Your present company offers tuition reimbursement, but the new company does not.

Scenario 2: Your child comes home from school with an assignment sheet for a school project. He / she is very excited about the project and begins work immediately, doing research on the Internet and gathering materials. You read over the assignment sheet and notice that your child is not including all of the required items in the project, and you have some ideas for how to improve the quality of the presentation. You recently read an article in a parenting magazine about the importance of a child developing responsibility for his/ her own learning. You recall the many ways in which your parents took over your school projects. You, on the other hand, want to encourage your child’s confidence in his / her ability to complete a project independently. The next day, you are at the grocery store when you see a parent of a student in your child’s class. That parent has spent over $30 in supplies for the science project and is taking a day off of work to put the pieces of the project together.

Scenario 3: You have two jobs, one during the week from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm, and one on Saturday from 3:00 pm to 11:00 pm. You are taking two classes, one that meets from 6:00 to 10:00 pm, and one class online. You have two kids, one who plays soccer, and one who is in band. You have two elderly parents who no longer drive. You have two siblings, one who lives two (2) miles away, and one who lives in another state. You have two (2) papers due in your classes the same week that one (1) of your children has a soccer tournament, and the other child has a band concert. You are coaching the soccer team, and you are in charge of fundraising for the band. You have a goal to complete your degree in two (2) years. Your doctor tells you that your blood pressure, your cholesterol, and your weight are too high and recommends several medications that cost you nearly $200 per month after your insurance co-pay.

Scenario 4: You are a sales representative for a company that encourages staff to log time in the field and away from the office. You are expected to begin and end your day at the office. You notice that each day when you arrive and return another co-worker is already there, and you wonder whether this person spends most of his / her time at the office. At your weekly sales meeting, you are informed of your co-workers’ outstanding sales performance. You suspect that this co-worker is spending more time flattering the boss instead of working leads in the field, and as a result is getting the best client referrals. Your own sales numbers have steadily decreased since this other sales representative was hired.

Scenario 5: Professor’s Choice – problem scenario presented by your professor.

Scenario 6: Student’s Choice – Problem scenario presented by you.

Review the six-step problem solving process outlined in the webtext, based on the article “The Problem Solving Process” located at http://www.gdrc.org/decision/problem-solve.html:

  • Step One: Define the problem
  • Step Two: Analyze the problem
  • Step Three: Generate options
  • Step Four: Evaluate options
  • Step Five: Make your decision
  • Step Six: Implement and reflect

Write a four to five (4-5) page paper in which you:

  1. Define the problem in the scenario that you have chosen.
  2. Analyze the problem in the scenario.
  3. Generate options for solving the problem in the scenario.
  4. Evaluate the options for solving the problem.
  5. Decide on the best option for solving the problem.
  6. Explain how you will implement the decision made and reflect on whether this option was the most effective.

The paper should follow guidelines for clear and organized writing:

  • Include an introductory paragraph and concluding paragraph.
  • Address main ideas in body paragraphs with a topic sentence and supporting sentences.
  • Adhere to standard rules of English grammar, punctuation, mechanics, and spelling.

Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:

  • This course requires use of Strayer Writing Standards (SWS). The format is different than other Strayer University courses. Please take a moment to review the SWS documentation for details.
  • Based on the guidelines in SWS, “A well-researched assignment has at least as many sources as pages.” Therefore, since this assignment requires you to write at least 4-5 pages, you should include at least 4-5 references.

The specific course learning outcomes associated with this assignment are:

  • Recognize the hindrances to the decision-making process in order to apply problem-solving skills to a variety of situations.
  • Create written work utilizing the concepts of critical thinking.
  • Use technology and information resources to research issues in critical thinking skills and informal logic.

Respond to a classmate who holds a different philosophical orientation than you and share an insight. her reply is below. This is normally $5. Few sentences and maybe a question

My topic of research interest would be something involving corrections. Although I am not entirely sure what I would like to research for my dissertation, I am interested in correctional treatment programs and how effective they are. I have done research on this topic in the past, but as an overall correctional treatment, not necessarily focusing on one type of offender. I would like to focus on one type of offender, particularly sexual offenders. Are treatment programs effective in jails/prisons? What types of programs work in restoring cognitive-behavioral change and lower recidivism rates? How does the community feel when a sexual offender is released back into their community? I would like to be able to answer all of these questions. I particularly find sexual offenders more interesting than other offenders because they commit more serious crimes than other offenders. Drug-related offenders and violent offenders are also interesting and important to research, but I find sexual offenders the most interesting. There are many crimes that can be classified for one to be a sexual offender. There are more serious offenses such as child molestation and not as serious ones such as urinating in public. The offenses have such a wide range of severity so it would be interesting to see the how each offender responds to treatment depending on their level of offense.

According to the Missouri State University (2014), the five philosophical orientations are progressivism (needs and interests of a person), perennialism (knowledge of enduring great ideas), essentialism (disciplinary and systematic), existentialism (education that will give an understanding to people’s lives), and social reconstruction (creating new social order). The one that reflects my worldview the most would be progressivism. In order to help a person, or in my interest of helping sexual offenders receiving treatment, it would be most important to understand the needs and interest of a person. Each person and offender are different, so it would be necessary to understand what each person requires. For example, if a treatment program is implemented, it may be effective for 8 out of 10 offenders. But, why was the program not effective for those 2 other offenders? Clearly, this was not the correct program from them. Understanding of what is required from each person would help to place them in the correct treatment program. All of the other philosophical orientations are necessary, but it is first important to understand the basic needs of an individual before going ahead to implement the rest of the orientations.

Dr. Patton, from this week’s video resource (Laureate Education, 2016), explains that epistemology is the study of knowledge. It is understanding how we know what we know. Ontology is the study of being, existence, and the nature of reality. Epistemology requires separating yourself from the world so that you can be on the outside looking in. Ontology is studying the world that is not physical but rather how people are. Both of these can lead to different research approaches. Ontology is more hands on rather than epistemology which is seeing the world by being separate from it. Both approaches are extremely useful but it also depends on what type of research one is conducting to understand which approach to take. For me, I would probably consider ontology. Ontology would help me to understand people and why they are the way that they are. In understanding sexual offenders, ontology would be necessary to understand their thinking behavior to apply it to reality, to understand their human thought processes.

Computer Input-Output Technologies that Link Pilots and Air Traffic Controllers

data link control and display unit

Both the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and Eurocontrol (Europe’s FAA) actively research, experiment with and deploy technologies in order to create a safer and more efficient airspace system.

An example is Controller-Pilot Data Link Communications (CPDLC), which in addition to the existing radio, creates a second channel for communication between pilots and air traffic controllers (ATC). Instead of keying the radio, ATC and pilots type instructions and requests and send via text messaging. This reduces ATC workload and frees up the radio channels for important communications.

Greetings Professor Allen & Class

In review of Chapter 1 this course teaches the nurse of today that the history of this profession has for all intent and purposes been the catalyst to seven basic trends that give emphasis to the nurse’s image, our education, the advancement of the practice our consistent involvement in war the ongoing workforce issues, requirements for licensure, board regulations and the professions commitment to nursing research (Judd, 2014, p. 2-5).

It is of great importance for me to share and utilize the accomplishments of our history in a way where it actually brings a different light to the unfolding of the history of the innovators who lived and practiced in very complex times and environments; they used their nursing experience to develop the nursing process in caring for the sick while improving patient outcomes.
I have actually considered incorporating a review of nursing history into our bi-annual skills fair.

My contribution and responsibility to the history of nursing is to continue in providing safe patient centered care based on nursing research, evidenced base practice for the best patient care outcomes in a shared interprofessional collaborative healthcare environment (aacnnursing.org).

Most of us work in extremely fast paced environments and the history of nursing is not something that is thought about. Most societies today consider the nursing profession as respectful because of this recognition it based upon professional accountability, professional image and a trust that has been built upon over the last 150 plus years; historically we were not always looked at with respect however it is vital that as nurses we share this history and our appreciation of the history and that of the trendsetters who impacted the integration of theory, knowledge, skills, and research coincides with the practice and standards of the profession today and the future of nursing (aacnnursing.org).
