The USA and Japan were in negotiations for a period of ten years, (1977 – 1988) over oranges. The Americans had certain goals that they wanted to accomplish in these negotiations. These goals included; exporting of American oranges in the Japanese market, demand that Japan liberalizes its market, and to eliminate the trade barriers in Japan. The Japanese also had their own goals that they wanted to accomplish in the negotiation process. These included; maintaining its positive image outside Japan, avoiding intervention from GATT (General Agreement on Trade and Tariffs), and to avoid sanctions from abroad.

Initially, the Japanese refused to negotiate right away, and started negotiating only when Americans threatened them that they would take the issue to GATT panel.Using Hofstede’s Model of Cultural Dimensions from our textbook, compare and contrast the cultural differences that might influence both parties.

  • Based on the cultural differences, develop a culturally responsive negotiation strategy for American negotiators to deal with Japanese negotiators.

This Reflect and Respond assignment will allow you to discuss how motivation is linked to individual performance, and describe different kinds of absenteeism and turnover.

When looking for a job, or deciding between multiple job offers, what are (or would be) the most important factors that you would consider? How would you go about getting information about those factors prior to applying or making a decision about a job offer?

Respond to initial post:

There is considerable debate about whether the conflicting foundational assumptions of quantitative and qualitative research methods allow researchers to “mix” methods.

  • Find an article on “mixing methods” in research.
  • Discuss the article and then how to address the issue of “mixing methods” in research.

For all discussions, students must respond to or evaluate two peer postings with at least a 125-word response that is well thought out, supported by resources, and instigative of critical analysis or discussion.

Respond post 1:

  • Mixing methods in research can be challenging. Plastow (2016, p. 89) points out that the strengths and weaknesses of each method can balance each other out if applied properly. It is also discussed that the multiple perspectives gathered through triangulation helps the researcher to avoid biases and helps build associations between what is observed and theory construction (Plastow, 2016, p.89). Plastow (2016, p. 89) also contends that the using a mixed methods approach can all the researcher to elaborate the findings of quantitative and qualitative portions of the study to increase the validity, trustworthiness, and rigor of the study. It is also pointed out that there are drawbacks to using mixed methods. One drawback is that students will often attempt to construct mixed methods studies using multiple paradigms which creates more difficulty for the student (Plastow, 2016, p. 90). The difficulty often lies in basic mistakes and lack of expertise needed to execute the methodologies chosen (Plastow, 2016, p. 90). Students often struggle with categorizing quantitative data and often try to reduce qualitative data into quantifiable numbers (Plastow, 2016, p. 90). Sometimes mistakes are made as the researcher tries to experience proficiency in too many dissimilar methodologies within the paradigms of the research simultaneously (Plastow, 2016, p. 90). Plastow (2016, p. 90) points out that mixed methods approach can be messy which can cause a student to get lost when absorbed in the data analysis. Plastow (2016, p. 90) argues that students should be taught to develop an in-depth understanding of one research paradigm instead of being taught mixed method designs.I understand Plastow’s position as an instructor, but I feel that I disagree with her assessment. I think (and may be incorrect in thinking) that students should be taught how to incorporate mixed methodologies. I would argue that at the undergraduate and post graduate levels students should be taught how to code qualitative and quantitative research and how to correctly write up the results so that by the time they get to their dissertation they are well versed in multiple methodologies allowing them to produce meaningful research that will help advance their topic’s knowledge base. Some ways to avoid the pitfalls of mixed methods design is to clearly define all aspects and variables before starting the project. Next be flexible to adapt to changes as needed in the process. Then keep clear and accurate notes on all aspects of the research. Also, when mixing methods do not reduce qualitative data into quantitative numbers. Learn to integrate the different writing styles needed for each type of data into one cohesive analysis. Bottom line is that mixed methods is difficult but doable.

ere are two parts of this course that give your instructor an opportunity to know you personally: general communication through messages, and discussion board. Discussion board is a formal way for your instructor to learn about your writing skills and your ability to synthesize, analyze and evaluate information (AKA ‘critical thinking’). More importantly, it is your opportunity to learn how to improve these skills.

Scientists communicate with each other and with the general public in writing. Just as in other fields of study, the ability to write clearly and concisely is essential to being successful as a scientist. At the college level, it is unacceptable to write in incomplete sentences, use incorrect grammar or sentence structure, to misspell words, or fail to correctly punctuate your sentences. If you have difficulty with writing, there are resources that you need to use before you submit your discussion board answer for grading. Here are some possibilities:

  • Purchase a book that you can reference when you are writing to check your grammar. Strunk and White is a good one, but there are many available.
  • Grammarly (free website) could also be helpful.
  • Purchase or use an on-line dictionary .
  • Purchase or use an on-line thesaurus.
  • Pair up with another student and read and edit each other’s posts before you submit them to the formal discussion forum.
  • Type your work in a word processing program and then copy and paste into the discussion board. You can then use the features of the word processor to catch most spelling and grammar mistakes. Remember, these will NOT help with word usage errors (there, their, they’re–for example).
  • Be particularly careful about the use of apostrophes (its and it’s are NOT the same words). I am amazed at the number of times I see incorrect use of apostrophes.
  • CTC Research Assistance Paper Review Service at http://www.ctcd.edu/academics/library/research-assistance-paper-review-service/.

If there are too many grammatical errors in a post, you will receive a ZERO for the post. A specific number of errors is not given, because the situation is different if you write 100 words and have 5 grammatical errors or if you write 500 words and have 5 grammatical errors. Also, there are degrees of error. For example, the words affect and effect can be very difficult to use correctly, while avoiding sentence fragments and basic spelling errors should be very easy.

Another hazard of discussions is that students often simply repeat what has already been posted. The material posted must be original– not repetitious of posts of other students. Students should also find their own sources. Do not wait until others post and then just go to the sites they found.

Finally, it is critical to correctly cite sources. Here are some examples of how you may cite in the discussions:

  1. In a study by Smith (1991) on the species……determined that the species was self- incompatible.
  2. The species …. is self-incompatible (Smith, 1991)….
  3. In a study by Smith (1) on the species…..
  4. The species is self-incompatible (1)…..

At the bottom of the post, you will then write:

1. Smith, S., 1991. Pollination ecology …….[you give the full title]. American Journal of Botany 22(3). [you give the full source either in APA or MLA format] If you got the information from a web site, you would put the web site here. Again, this citation may either follow MLA or APA

Following is the grading scale for discussion questions:

Initial PostPossible PointsPoints EarnedPost has correct grammar and punctuation.3 Post addresses the topic in an original way.2 Post demonstrates integration of information and personal relevance of the topic.2 References are correctly formatted.1 Reply is at least 100 words, not including niceties like “You did a great job on this post.  Way to go”.  The reply will also show critical thought about the post and/or the topic.2 Extra credit may be earned for particularly well developed and well synthesized, analyzed and evaluated material.Up to 10 points EC You will earn a zero if you do not cite sources in the text of the post, you do not cite complete sources at the end of the post or you have an excessive number of grammatical/spelling/punctuation errors.= 0 for the whole post

Develop a response to this question. Ensure you have answered all parts of the question completely. Complete this assignment using complete sentences in a paragraph format, and be sure to check your spelling when complete.

Read Discussion Board Directions located on the course menu on the left side of the screen before you begin to post or reply.

Choose a Review from the reviewed articles from Health News Review, published by Gary Schwetzer.

Immediately post the name of the article on the discussion board. Once you have done this, you are the only one who may review that article.

DO NOT choose an article someone else has already “claimed”.

  1. Examine the credentials of the people who reviewed your article. Give a brief summary of their education level and credibility.  Do not simply copy all of the credentials.  Choose the ones that suggest the person has (or does not have) the credentials to review this particular article.  Do not just state the credentials.  Judge the credentials.
  2. Read the article being reviewed. You will find the article just above the review.   Do not just take your information from what the reviewers said about the article.  When you summarize the article, you must include the key points the article made so that other students may see the good and bad points of the article.   As you read it, jot down some notes for yourself about what you see that makes the article credible or not.
  3. Read the review.
  4. Write a summary of the article and the key points the reviewers made about the article.  Do not confound the credibility of the article with the credibility of the researchers.  Remember, the article you read is a summary produced by a journalist.  You did not read the original scientific article.

Before you submit your post, use the grading rubric to be sure you have actually met all of the requirements of posts in general, as well as this post specifically.

Assignment:Module 3: Perspective Taking: Ecological Systems and Life Course Model

Point Value:40 points

Format:-Name on paper

  • Course # and date
  • Assignment title
  • Typed in Times New Roman Font (12 point)
  • Double-spaced
  • APA:Use the APA format for citations within the paper and the reference list at the end of the paper
  • IN ADDITION – Include headings given within the body of the paper (as indicated below).

Directions:Write a paper which addresses the parts (A-D) written below.

Include the following headings within your paper to help guide your writing as well as to help the reader:

Definition of Health and Wellbeing

Problem

Alternative Perspectives

Ecological Systems

Life Course Model

  • Definition of Health and Wellbeing: Rewrite and/or synthesize your individual definition of health and wellbeing into one concise paragraph.Consider ideas from your group’s discussion and written assignment.
  • Problem: Select one of the case studies posted in Blackboard to complete the following sections. You will be using this case study in subsequent assignments.
  • Alternative Perspectives:
  • Select either the Ecological Systems or the Life Course Model to examine your case:Examine the context of the problem from the perspective taking approach.

NOTE:Remember to include the reference citations you used to build this definition. That is, cite the source within your paragraph (these are listed alphabetically) AND in the reference list at the end of the assignment. For example:

Health and wellbeing is defined as achieving full physical, emotional and intellectual functioning in which there is absence of disease or distress in any one of these human developmental areas (Apple, 2007; Ball, 2006; Cat, 1962; Doe, 1993; Smith & Jones, 2010).

  • Problem/Situation Description: Identify at one significant problem related to health and wellbeing in this case study.Write a brief paragraph which tells the reader “what is” the problem.
  • Rationale as to Why this is a Problem: Write about how this problem connects to your definition of health and wellbeing (1 paragraph).Indicate “what is missing” or “the gap” that indicates the situation you have described is a problem that needs to be addressed. For example, this might be written like the following paragraph:

For this paper, I have defined health and wellbeing as related to ‘full physical, emotional and intellectual functioning in which there is absence of disease or distress’ In this situation, therefore, full health and wellbeing is not being achieved, because the grandfather has suffered a stroke and is unable to function in physically, emotionally and mentally appropriate ways.Although the stroke is not happening at this moment, that is, it is absent (and this somewhat contradicts my definition of health and wellbeing) there are consequences that have occurred because of the stroke. This situation represents a problem, therefore, because there is a difference (a gap) between what the grandfather’s life was like before and what it is now as related to his health and wellbeing.

Two different perspectives are described in the case study.Write one paragraph for each perspective in which you respond to the following questions:

  • From whose point of view is this perspective?
  • What is justified or warranted from this perspective? Is there adequate evidence? If there are limits to this perspective, what are the limits?
  • What is assumed or implicit in this perspective that needs to be made explicit?
  • Overall, is this perspective reasonable? Explain your answer with a summary statement.

For the Ecological System identify two different systems which are directly or indirectly involved in this problem:microsystem, mesostyem, exosystem, macrosystem, chronosytem.

  • Identify the system and write a brief definition for each
  • Describe/explain how this system is related to the specific problem identified in this assignment for each system

OR

For the Life Course Model: identify two different events which may have contributed to this

specific problem: historical, economical, societal, psychological

  • Identify the event and write a brief definition for each

2. Explain how these two events may have compounded to produce this outcome.

  • APA format should be used for citations within the paper and the reference list

Directions:

  • Cumulative Writing:Copy/paste (and revise if needed) your individual assignment on assignment on ‘Perspective Taking: Ecological Systems and Life Course Model’ (from Module 3).
  • Systems of Action:Give at least three examples (for each type of action: technical, communicative and critical) that may be used to help resolve the problem described in your paper.Be future oriented:Think about what might be done to help resolve the problem — not what actions have already taken place already.

Be sure all of the following sections (with headings) are included:

Definition of Health and Wellbeing

Problem

Alternative Perspectives

Ecological Systems

Life Course Model

Add an additional heading:Systems of Action

  • Technical actions are those related to completing an immediate goal or making a product.
  • Communicative actions are those focused on achieving ‘deeper’ communication, that is, to achieve shared beliefs, mutual understanding, transmit culture or traditions.
  • Critical actions are those actions and/or ‘deeper’ questions which help to examineassumptions, beliefs, and attitudes.

NOTE:You may notice that some of these actions do “overlap” with one another (it is OK if they do).The point is to move our focus from technical actions only to the consideration of multiple forms of action that may be taken to best resolve a problem.
